The School's Philosophy
BCD Seal
Berkshire Country Day School is a small nonsectarian coeducational school, which offers a challenging program with a nurturing atmosphere. We affirm that each student needs support and guidance to learn in the spirit of inquiry and discovery, to respect the rights and talents of others, to become an informed citizen of the world, and to change and grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

"...to learn in a spirit of inquiry and discovery"
Learning is Discovery is a living motto at Berkshire Country Day School. BCD provides an atmosphere and attitude in which each student builds confidence and gains competence through close relationships with a number of teachers and peers each year. During this process we express our appreciation of individual talent and creativity in many ways.

"...to respect the rights and talents of others"
In thousands of contacts each day, young and old at Berkshire Country Day School strive to live and work together. Important matters are discussed in homeroom meetings throughout the school. Teachers, coaches and leaders of activities are sensitive to this "affective" side of the learning process. The faculty discusses the strengths and areas of concern of all students on a regular basis throughout the year.

"...to become an informed citizen of the world"
In the interdependent world in which we live, we feel that it is critically important for our students to understand modern life at different levels: family, local, county, state, national and international. Many of our courses, extracurricular activities, special service projects, class outings, and field trips are set up with the idea of global citizenship in mind.

"...to change and grow mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually"
Within our strong academic program, we encourage a range of activities, a variety of teaching styles, and an array of curricular materials. In order for a student to change and grow in these four domains, we feel that BCD must provide adult role models second to none. Further, we maintain a low teacher/student ratio in order to provide as much individualized instruction as possible. We also draw upon Berkshire County - and beyond - for added educational, athletic, social service and cultural experiences.

BCD accepts students of average and above-average ability in preschool through ninth grade. BCD is a rigorous yet caring community in which students and teachers share in the process of learning. At the center of this process is a strong partnership between home and school. Close personal communication between the school and our families is a cornerstone of BCD's philosophy.
