Mathematics
Mathematical inquiry trains the mind to work analytically, to solve problems, to search for cause-and-effect solutions, and to articulate the thinking behind that work. Our program is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of student backgrounds, abilities, and interests, while challenging students to develop mastery of mathematical skills. We hold to the belief that all students can learn mathematics when the material is presented in a manner that makes sense to them. As a department, daily lessons incorporate a variety of modalities to increase the likelihood of genuine understanding. The traditional sequencing of the teaching of mathematics meshes naturally with the cognitive development of adolescents. The utilization of ability grouping helps us to tailor the best fit within the range of cognitive development that exists.
Highlights:
- Advanced curriculum culminating with the study of geometry for advanced students
- Teachers utilize manipulatives and technology when appropriate
- Project based lessons provide a meaningful backdrop for students to hone their skills
- Lessons in problem-solving develop techniques for approaching the unknown and expand the application of mathematics in daily life
