All parents and guardians of BCD children automatically belong to the Parents' Association. Active paricipation on the Association's committees and their projects gives parents opportunities to become better aquainted with one another and with the life of the school. Though volunteerism is not required of parents, the expectation is that each parent will volunteer to work on a minimum of two school functions. Volunteer activities contribute substantially to the well being and overall healthy environment at BCD. Over the years the school has been fortunate in having all parents give willingly of their time and talent to enrich BCD.
The Parents' Association:
- is an important arm of the School- and is compromised of current parents, the Head of School and one faculty representative;
- exists to serve BCD's students, parents, faculty and the community;
- serves as a forum for school communication. It enables parents to meet in group settings to discuss topics of mutual interest: current school issues, future school goals, current trends in learning and teaching, community needs, opportunities for BCD, and other topics. These discussions allow each attending member to have a voice and also help disseminate information throughout the BCD community. The PA believes that the school grows closer and stronger through communication;
- also promotes and organizes volunteer services at BCD in order to increase parent involvement and volunteerism as much as possible. All parents are expected to donate time to at least two volunteer activities each year. In this way many special events - unique to the school and special to all who attend - are made possible. Through volunteer efforts we are able both to enrich our children's lives and to help contain the cost of educating them; and
- hopes, through its efforts, to further the school's support of academic achievement, the well-rounded development of each student, and to encourage responsive and responsible citizenship.
The Parents' Association is organized by a Steering Committee whos members are elected each year by the membership. The Steering Committee encourages interested parents to attend the Association's monthly meetings (date, time, and location is announced in advance in the ABCs). It also encourages parents to communicate with the members through notes placed in the PA Suggestion Box in Albright Hall, email (
pa@berkshirecountryday.org) or by calling individual members.
The Parents' Association and the Head of School select Class Parents who help teachers keep in touch with parents of the class about non-academic class affairs. Individual parents are encouraged to volunteer to be Class Parents in the spring of each year. Class Parents contact other parents to assist with trips, class parties or other projects that the class might undertake. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer to organize special trips or events (coordinated with the teachers) for their child's class, and many host get-togethers during the year.
