Berkshire Country Day School Students Recycle For Energy Efficiency
BCD's student-run Environmental Club launched a recycling program in May with the goal to turn used cans and bottles into the cash needed to purchase new energy efficient motion activated light control switches for campus buildings. The student-directed and run initiative, part of a campus-wide "green" movement, raised over $90, enough for the Environmental Club to purchase three switches and beta test three classrooms. Using these sensors to detect movement in a classroom and turn lights on or off as needed is estimated to save the school 10 percent in electrical savings where installed. The group's ultimate goal is to install these motion activated light control switches throughout the school, where applicable, for greater overall campus energy savings.

The BCD Winter Auction features over 100 items from current and past parents, community businesses, and BCD faculty and students, and offers something for everyone: experiences, trips, vacation homes, personal services, gift certificates, artwork, household items, clothes, signed books, accessories, and behind-the-scenes opportunities. Responsive Classroom
by Carmen Dockery Perkins

After a year of evaluating BCD's middle and upper divisions with the faculty, it became evident to me that there was an opportunity to develop an essential piece of our program - the social skills curriculum. This September, following a workshop led by Stan Davis, I met with Paul Frantz to discuss my ideas. He and I had left that workshop with our five other colleagues wondering how to best take our next steps. Paul shared resources from programs that had been conducted in the middle and upper schools in past years, including values education, a human development program and activities to share with our students during advisor and class lunches.

Many of these activities are no longer an integrated part the middle and upper school experience because a combination of growing academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs has squeezed out dedicated time for these programs to occur. I recognize that the diversity of choice and academic excellence of BCD’s newer programs have many merits, and I believe that a strong the social curriculum is equally important to accomplishing our mission and in the best interests of our students. This assumption led me to look at what it is that we currently do have in place and how we might better incorporate new ideas into a comprehensive social curriculum.

First order of business was to get myself up to the team-building Hulbert, VT trip that the 6th grade takes for four full days in October. The experience was a powerful one. During the day and night I stayed, I observed teachers facilitating activities and a class working beautifully together – leaving with newfound respect and appreciation of each other. I returned to campus eager to see where else we already shine. From St. Stephen's table (the local soup kitchen where our upper school students volunteer), to the many clubs and student activities the middle and upper school host, to the bi-weekly advisor lunches we hold, the two divisions are buzzing with opportunity.

This year, the most exciting moment of my professional development occurred during a "Responsive Classroom" workshop in Rutland, VT on October 23. The Responsive Classroom program is a core element in our Early Childhood and Lower School divisions. Middle school advisors continue to bridge the Responsive Classroom approach in the 4th grade homeroom, yet in the later grades schedule constraints limit the time available for this and other related curricula. The program boasts a "...practical approach to creating safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms..." and I wanted to learn more. After just one day of a Responsive Classroom workshop, I understood how right the fit is for BCD and knew that there is ample opportunity for the Middle and Upper Schools to continue to build Responsive Classroom values into their day as well. The Responsive Classroom website states, "the Responsive Classroom approach is based on the premise that children learn best when they have both academic and social-emotional skills. The approach therefore consists of classroom and schoolwide practices for deliberately helping children build academic and social-emotional competencies." I believe it is essential that we develop similar programs in the middle and upper schools to best educate and support our students during their preteen and adolescent years.

Central to the Responsive Classroom approach is the assumption that all children want to learn and can learn and, furthermore, that the academic and social curricula we teach our students are so intertwined neither can truly succeed without the other. BCD's Social Curriculum Ad-hoc Committee has the task of determining how and when a Responsive Classroom curriculum, and other activities and curricula, can occur for our middle and upper school students. For example, the committee will also investigate the "Origins" program which is an off-shoot of Responsive Classroom and specifically designed for middle and upper schools. I am committed to enhancing the work that we do in the areas of social skills and values education and look forward to keeping you updated on our progress. Berkshire Country Day School's Sixth Grade presents "Mrs. Shadowbrook's Attic"
Berkshire Country Day School's Theater Department is proud to present Mrs. Shadowbrook's Attic, an original play written by local playwright, screenwriter, and director Juliane Hiam and performed by BCD's Sixth Grade class.

The play is set in a gilded age mansion in the Berkshires and tells the story of children who discover a magical book of stories in the attic that turns the attic alive with fairies and shadows from another realm that only children can enter.

Juliane Hiam is best known locally for her "The World According to Jacuzzi" columns in the Berkshire Eagle and plays she has written for Shakespeare & Company. She is also known nationally for writing and directing such award- winning movies as Dead Silence with Danny Aiello and Sally Kirkland. BCD theater director David Librizzi commissioned Hiam to write a play specifically for BCD's sixth grade class.

"I used snippets from the stories of 'Echo and Narcissus' from Ovid, 'Through the Looking Glass' by Lewis Carroll, and the poem 'Healed of My Hurt' by Herman Melville as inspiration," says Hiam. "These are the stories and poems that the children find in the magical book in the attic."

The play will run on Thursday, November 20 at 1:45 p.m. and Friday, November 21 at 6:00 p.m. Both performances will be held at Berkshire Country Day School's Furey Hall Music Room, and are free and open to the public.

For more information contact Berkshire Country Day School at 413-637-0755 or David Librizzi at 413-884-4641.

BCD presents Last One Standing, an original one-act play
Berkshire Country Day Schoolan independent school for students in pre-kindergarten through ninth grade, is pleased to present an original one-act play entitled Last One Standing on Friday, November 7 & Saturday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. at BCD's Winthrop Theater in Lenox, MA.

Last One Standing, created by 13 eighth and ninth grade students in BCD's Upper School Stage and Film Ensemble and directed by BCD's Theater & Film Director Jesse Howard, offers a clever, insightful, and often comedic look at politics and the political process as seen through the eyes of small children on the playground. The original play was developed over a nine-week rehearsal period during which all participants collaborated in the creation of the material through a unique process involving improvisation exercises, character games, brainstorming sessions, and writing assignments. This is BCD's fifth such original production in as many years including last fall's "Nerdseye View," a comic look at social hierarchy that played to delighted audiences last fall.

Opening just three days after the election, Last One Standing is the perfect opportunity to come and reflect on the events of the presidential campaign, laugh a little, and maybe even gain a little insight along the way.

"Building Schools Where Everyone Belongs"
On Monday, September 8, a team of seven BCD teachers attended a workshop entitled "Bullying Prevention in Schools: Empowering the Bystander" with featured speaker Stan Davis. This workshop was sponsored and underwritten by the Berkshire District Attorney's Office through its anti-bullying initiative. District Attorney David E. Capeless, in conjunction with his office of Community Outreach and Education, hosted nearly 60 Berkshire County area schools.

Educators and administrators from both private and public schools filled a Jiminy Peak conference room for the event. Stan Davis is renowned in this field, traveling all over the country and abroad to present his work on building inclusive school communities. This workshop focused on staff-based and classroom-based strategies for developing effective programs which address bullying and other social issues. An extensive portion of the workshop was dedicated to youth-empowerment and, specifically, on how to empower the bystander.

BCD's teachers returned to campus invigorated and inspired. They have formed an Ad-hoc committee which will continue to evaluate and further develop BCD's social curriculum. Parents and students will be invited to join the faculty and administration in this process. Stan Davis' website www.stopbullyingnow.com is an excellent resource for schools and families alike.
